My mother used to say I never met a stranger. I reckon she was right but that didn’t keep me from feeling like a foreigner. I was the peculiar child that didn’t look quite like the others; a raucous summer born among winter babies. I cared too much and cried too easy and sometimes I forgot that I wasn’t everybody’s mother.

Old graves were fascinating so I hung out in cemeteries a lot. As a matter of fact some of the best times and conversations were had in graveyards. I wasn’t insane. It’s not like I was talking to ghosts, heavens no. There was always someone with me, a living, breathing someone. I suppose that does seem a bit morbid. It’s probably best I don’t talk about the mausoleums and the shallow graves except to tell you I never moved any bones, I’d never be so disrespectful. Not that the bones cared one way or another whether they laid still or was carried off and gnawed by a wild varmint. We laughed a lot in those days but we were never cheeky or impolite to the memory of the deceased.
